ST MARY’S FIELDS  DAWN CHORUS. - MAY 15th 2005

There was an unusually late frost on the night of May 15th.

The seventeen people who responded to their alarm clocks were clad in winter gear as they met at the car park behind St Mary’s Church, Kidlington, at 4.00 am.

This was the third successive year that a dawn chorus event was held at St Mary’s Fields, and each year the number of birds and volume of sound have increased.

There is probably no site in Oxfordshire that supports such a high concentration of birds per hectare, which is a credit to the efforts of  the Kidlington Parish Council and local volunteers.

A pair of Cuckoos started the concert at 4.00 pm precisely male and female holding a conversation exactly as they did in 2004. By 4.30 am it was beginning to get light and the watchers began to recognize each other.

Robins, Song Thrushes, and Blackbirds were then in full song, and in the next half an hour six species of warblers swelled the chorus.

Finally, the finches and titmice joined producing such a cacophony of sound it was difficult to sort out individual singers.

By 5.30 am the sun had risen fully and the mist was rising from the frosted vegetation. It was time to take a tally.

A total of 28 different species were heard, and another one seen flying over in the last half an hour.

Finally a Swift was noted flying around the church by the last person to leave at 5.45 am.

Those returning home to breakfast (or bed) will remember a magic morning.

Come and join us next year.
