PROGRESS AT ST MARY’S FIELDS

On March 29th a party of 15 volunteers at St Mary’s Fields worked with enthusiasm achieving a surprising amount in two hours. Having young people among us was especially encouraging.

Coppicing the small ash trees opened up new areas where wildlife should thrive. A small section of the massive wall of sloe was trimmed back as an experiment to see if ground cover could flourish.  Painting of the fence continued, but there is some way to go and more help is needed. Overhanging branches along the road entering the car park were trimmed back.  Three holly bushes were planted.

Some activity will be needed in future months such as clearing rubbish, the height of the breeding season for wildlife approaches, so the next major effort will be in the autumn.

Some 16 sedentary bird species established their territories last month and at least another 10 species of newly arrived migrants will join them this month, adding to the morning chorus.

Any information about the wildlife in the meadows would be welcome. As well as birds we would like to know more about bats, flowers, invertebrates, mice, grass snakes, butterflies….etc.    This would enable us to summarise the present value of St Mary’s Fields, and watch future developments.
