KFC Match report - 26th September

The ‘Bluefin’ Insurance Brokers Hellenic League Challange Cup Preliminary Round

Saturday 26th September 2009

Kidlington  5       Thame United  1

Kidlington easily progressed into the next round of this competition comprehensively defeating Division One East side Thame, who came into the match boasting a 100% record from their league outings so far this season. On the day it was another warm sunny afternoon at Yarnton Road where the score line if anything at the final whistle flattered the visitors such was Kidlington’s dominance throughout the match.

There was a slow feel to the start of proceedings, Kidlington were seeing plenty of the ball and knocking it about well, but seemed unable to create a real goal scoring opportunity for their forwards.

Jimmy Deabill eventually had a chance in the 11th minute. Deabill looked well placed to test Thame keeper Paul Searl, but he made the wrong call and only succeeded in cushioning his headed attempt into the arms of the grateful keeper.

Thame’s best early chances were coming from set plays, from one of these, a corner a Thame player directed a header toward goal, but Ben Willoughby, making his full debut after his recent transfer from Woodstock was well placed to clear the danger from the goal line.

Kidlington took the lead in the 18th minute. Lewis Coyle swung in a corner and that man Big Jimmy Deabill running in at the far post to blasted a header into the back of the net for 1 – 0.

Not long after this Mark Baker and Jack Quainton combined well in the attacking third. Baker received the ball and ran at goal, as Searl came out Baker tried to squeeze the ball past him, but the keeper got a touch and the deflected the ball wide.

There were few other gilt edge chances in the half until in the 42nd minute Kiddy went 2 up. The home side were awarded a free kick about 25 yards out. Jordan Parker took it and played the ball into skipper Chris Weedon. Weedon muscled his way in front of his defender and deftly flicked the ball past the stranded Searl.

H.T. 2 – 0.

Straight from the kick-off Deabill nearly increased the home sides lead. The ball was worked up to him and he hit a powerful drive from the edge of the box which unfortunately passed just over the bar.

It wasn’t long though before it was 3 – 0. A super cross from Lewis Coyle found an un-marked Danny Leggett in the 48th minute. Leggett jumped well and directed his header back the way it had come planting the ball right into the top corner of the goal giving Searl no chance.

Deabill then had another great chance, but from about 10 yards out he skied his attempt. This was swiftly followed by Baker skipping past two defenders before playing a one two with Parker. Baker then hit a shot which Searl was forced to save well diving to his left.

Just after the hour Thame scored their consolation goal. A bit of a cock up between Tom McNamara and his defenders allowed Ben Connely time to get to the ball in front of them. McNamara eventually came to try to avert the danger, but only succeeded in flattening Connelly and in the challenge and the ball fell kindly to Aaron Rogers who had an empty net to knock it into for 3 – 1.

In the 70th minute some really good flowing football culminated with a glorious chance for Baker. Baker saw Searl coming and tried to chip him, but the ball was hit to firmly and went over the bar.

Kieran sanders came close in the 72nd minute when he cut in from the right and hit a rasping drive across the face of the goal but wide of the far post though.

Baker was really influential all afternoon and when he beat a couple of defenders he was once again one on one with Searl you felt he must score, however he tried to chip him again with the same result as the ball passed agonisingly wide of the target.

Kidlington added their 4th in the 84th minute. Some more good flowing football enabled Coyle to turn and then run cross field. From the edge of the area he played second half substitute Adam Lovegrove in and he made no mistake from about 12 yards placing his shot into the far corner of the net.

Adam Lovegrove then made it 5 – 1 in the 89th minute, firing home after some fine one touch football, the final ball being played into him by Weedon.

All in all it was another good performance, but you felt that Kidlington always had something in reserve had they needed it. The passing and running off the ball was exceptional and in the end had Kidlington won this match by a far greater margin I don’t think anyone would have been surprised. Kidlington’s Next match is against current league leaders on Tuesday evening and this will be the real acid test as to just how far Geary’s young side have progressed.
