Latest Match Report From Kidlington FC

FTL FUTBOL Hellenic League Premier Division

Tuesday 11th August 2009

Carterton  1       Kidlington  1

For Kidlington’s young guns this was collectively their 1st taste of League football at this level. A draw at the end of the day was not a bad result, but it could have been a whole lot better had any of Kiddies near misses found the net and an important lining decision been correctly administered.

Kidlington nearly got the dream start their 50 or so supporters, who had made the trip craved. Kieran Sanders weaved some magic down the right flank beating 2 defenders before crossing for Adam Lovegrove at the far post. Lovegrove looked odds on to score, however the ball ended in the side netting.

The match after this calmed down as both teams jockeyed for position. Carterton’s Mike Duerden came close when he met a right wing cross in the 19th minute, but powered his headed attempt over the bar. In the 31st minutes the hosts Kevin Lewis tested Kiddie keeper Tom McNamara with a powerful shot which he did well to save. Jimmy Deabill then flicked on for Mark Baker, with the latter shooting just wide.

Brad Chalmers made a good saving block to thwart Lewis before Carterton keeper James Domm made an excellent save from Sanders, who had cut in from the right and let fly from 20 yards.

Kidlington played some good football during this opening 45 minutes but were hampered by the long grass which seemed at times to nullify their swift passing game which we had seen so much of during the pre-season friendly’s.

H.T. 0 – 0.

The beginning of the second half nearly started with a goal for Carterton. Mark Threlfall and Lewis combined well before Lewis shot wide from just inside the box.

This action seemed to spur Kidlington on. Firstly some more magic from Sanders saw him turn and shoot from the edge of the box, where he was really unlucky to see his shot beat the keeper but deflect away off the near post. Next Baker beat 2 players before sending a dipping shot over Domm. The keeper, back peddling, just managed to get a fingertip to it and pushed the ball over the bar.

Kidlington took the lead in the 55th minute. A super cross from Tom Hayday gave Jimmy Deabill the perfect opportunity to rise and send a trademark looping header into the far corner of the net.

Almost immediately Hayday came close to adding a second. His shot from 25 yards seemed to have beaten Domm, but unfortunately passed narrowly over the bar.

Controversy was too reign in the 68th minute. Tom Castle was disposed on half-way; James Philpott came across to cover which left Kevin Lewis one on one with Chalmers. Lewis at full pace called for the ball, but it was delayed in being dispatched to him. He was clearly in an off-side position when the ball was played, but the refereeing assistant who was well behind play didn’t flag. Lewis then went on to round McNamara to slot home into an unguarded net for 1 - 1.

Kidlington didn’t deserve this, but their response was admirable. Baker came almightily close to reinstating their lead when his powerful run and shot saw the ball rebound back into play off the inside of the far post. Then Philpott was unlucky to see his headed attempt pass just wide of the far post.

There was more controversy in injury time. An interchange of passes allowed Lewis to get one on one with Philpott, in trying to get the ball Philpott brought him down, some 25 yards from goal. Match referee Mr Cox went to his pocket and it looked like a yellow card was to be awarded for the transgression, however he stuffed the yellow back inside and drew a red, maybe at this late stage a yellow would have sufficed, and it was debatable if the big defender was last man or not. However these days it seems sometimes you only need to sneeze to be cautioned or dismissed; still that’s the rules now.

All in all Kidlington won’t be unhappy with the point from this first match, but It’s a sure bet that most who were present must have felt that the 3 points should have been travelling back up the A34 with them. The last point must be to congratulate the followers of KFC for their great showing.
